Dry Cleaners Remediation, Bellevue WA
For Benenson Capital Corporation, Floyd|Snider performed a cleanup of a release of Perchloroethylene (PCE) from a former dry cleaners located in downtown Bellevue. Under the Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) Floyd|Snider was contracted to complete the cleanup of PCE in the surrounding soil which was present due to disposal of PCE directly into the stormwater system which subsequently entered a brick-lined stormwater manhole and leaked into the soil. A soil vapor extraction (SVE) system operated for several years at this location by a former consultant but had failed to fully cleanup soil around the manhole. Floyd|Snider developed a cleanup plan that consisted of removal of the manhole and the surrounding highly contaminated soil that posed a risk of long term groundwater contamination. Following the removal in 2003 of the soil to a depth of 20 feet, a new manhole and stormwater conveyance system was installed and groundwater was monitored to evaluate the effects of the source control action upon the residual concentrations found in groundwater under the manhole. On-going groundwater monitoring has shown that the soil removal has resulted in a significant downward trend in residual groundwater concentrations, paving the way for natural attenuation to become the long term remedy for groundwater at this site. In addition, soil to groundwater modeling was conducted to predict the impact to the groundwater from remaining low level concentrations of PCE that remained below the base of the excavation.
